A CAR scheme which helps so many people in the Lapford area has celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Lapford Voluntary Car Aid (LVCA) is a registered charity, governed by a very small committee, with a team of 12 volunteer drivers on its books.

It covers Lapford and Nymet Rowland parishes.

Passengers pay small fares for trips to the hospital, a doctor or a dentist.

Costs for passengers are minimal, for example £5 for a return to Crediton, Bow, Chulmleigh or Winkleigh, or £3 return to Morchard Bishop.

The scheme will also collect medication from pharmacies, deliver samples and carry out any other medical-related journeys.

The scheme’s secretary and Co-Ordinator Grace Hill explained that the scheme began in 1994 and was a year late in celebrating.

“We have 14 drivers at the moment and are pleased to welcome here today many of those plus past drivers, past and current sponsor representatives and some of those who use the scheme.

“We must thank Lapford Community Church, Lapford Parish Council and the Freemasons who have sponsored us in the past, some of who have representatives here today.

“We also have with us John and Edna Copus. John was chair and Edna was secretary in the early years.

“Rowan Peto was the original founder and currently John Burrow is chair with Jeanne Whittaker our treasurer.

“We run on donations, fundraising and legacies and have nearly 40 regular clients we take to health centres, etc.

“Our drivers use their own vehicles and get a fuel allowance.

“It is a vital service for so many.”

Donations to keep the scheme running would be welcomed.

The celebration was held at Lapford Congregational Church by kind permission of Deacon Carol Worsdell.
