CREDITON Parish Church, which is Grade I listed and one of the finest parish churches in the country, will be holding a Heritage Open Day on Wednesday, July 13, from 11am to 3pm.

The existing structure of the church is thought to be built on the site of Devon’s first cathedral and largely dates from the 13th century and the15th century. It is built on an enormous scale for a Devon parish church.

Local experts will be on hand to show visitors around the building and hopefully answer their questions.

Questions about the challenge of maintaining the building and its contents will be especially welcome.

Access will be available to the bell tower and the Governors Room on the top floor of the chapter house.

There are many treasurers at the church, monuments of national importance, a Harrison and Harrison organ, arguably one of the best peal of bells in the country and many smaller items of local and regional importance.

There will be an audio visual presentation in the Lady Chapel, a heritage trail for children and light refreshments will be available. Admission will be free of charge.

A second open day is planned for Saturday, September 10, from 11am to 3pm.

Further information about both open days is available from Bill Jerman on 01363 772865.
