THE first of two winter full peal attempts at Holy Cross Church will be on Saturday, November 11, Armistice Day.

It will be rung half muffled in memory of the fallen.

The band is drawn largely from the West Country area, including Sue Sparling from the Holy Cross band. Conducted by Tim Bayton from Exeter the peal will be 5,000 changes of Lincolnshire Surprise Maximus.

If successful this will be a first on two counts: the first of Lincolnshire on the bells and more significantly the first half muffled peal on the bells.

The muffles give the mournful echo effect – a loud change followed by a muffled change, the sound heard every Remembrance Sunday.

Starting shortly after 11am the peal will last for three-and-a-half hours.
