GUEST speaker at the October meeting of the Crediton branch of the Townswomen's Guild was Alan Quick, editorial manager of the Crediton Country Courier, who was introduced by the chairman, Pat Uren.

Alan gave a most interesting talk on his work at the town's newspaper, including how it started and his long involvement with it.

He explained how the Courier is produced and about its distribution and sale locally.

Alan said that sometimes he would attend several events in one day on behalf of the newspaper, including fetes, prizegivings and presentations, which meant dashing from one to the other.

He brought photographs, which had been taken over the years and members were particularly interested in those of his coverage of Royal visits, including meeting Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, the Duke of Edinburgh and on several occasions, the Queen.

He explained that advertising played a big part of the paper, charges varying according to size.

He spoke about some memorable and humorous occasions and said that he spends many hours typing stories about the events he has attended.

Thanks, on behalf of the Guild, were given by Mary Jack.

A break for tea followed before the business meeting.

The Arts and Crafts group have been very busy. They filled six shoe boxes, a bag full of hats, scarves and other knitted garments, also four big blankets, all going to an orphanage in Bulgaria.

Rose Roberts thanked all who had given items to help.

The Christmas lunch has been booked and will take place at the Devonshire Dumpling on December 15.

Birthday cards were presented to three members who were serenaded by members singing "Happy Birthday".

The competition for a family photo, judged by Alan Quick, was won by Enid Keast.

The next meeting will be held on November 3, when the speaker will be Mrs Wellings Thomas on the subject, Making Christmas cards. The competition will be for a Crocheted Doyley.
