THE candidates for a Mid Devon District Council by-election have been announced.

Four candidates will be standing in the poll for the election of a district councillor for the Upper Culm ward, which takes place on Thursday, June 17.

The election is needed as a result of the death of Cllr Glanmor Hughes in April, who had represented the ward since 2003.

Standing for election are James Bartlett for the Conservatives, Fiona Hutton for Labour, Adam Rich for the Green Party, and Sean Ritchie of the Liberal Democrats.

Following three by-elections for Mid Devon, which were held earlier this month, all of which were won by the Conservative Party, the Conservatives hold 19 seats on the council, with 11 Liberal Democrats, nine Independents and two Greens.

The council is currently run by an Independent with support from the Conservatives.

The winning candidate elected will be in office until the May 2023 local elections.
