CHERITON Fitzpaine Garden Club held its first Spring Exhibition for two years, and it was a huge success, despite our Chairman Andrew Dean and his partner Ann Nixon both catching Covid two days before the event!

Show Secretary Jeannine Rundle rose to the challenge with efficiency and humour.

Prior to the Show, a flower arranging workshop was organised by Fay Williams, Chair of the PTA, with the help of David and Mary Nunn, both Garden Club members.

A total of 22 children came to “have-a-go” and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Mary Burchmore presented the awards and trophies and Barbara Pratt swept the board with her dainty flower arrangements, winning the Nora Tatlow and Little Hayne awards.

Mary also won the cookery prize for her vegetable cake and heese straws, whilst Graham Marshall came first in the class for hot cross buns. The Club also has a “People’s Choice” for Flower arranging, and this was shared between Jacqui Bausch, Mary Nunn and Chris Carr.

The “People’s Choice” for best photograph went to Clare LeHuray.

In the Children’s Classes (Floral Art), Izzy Taylor-Shorland came first with her Floral Basket and Bethany Mackie was second.

The Brownies and Rainbows had created some amazing Gardens in Plastic bottles and dishes: Amelie May won the Brownies class and Lily Ann Mackie the Rainbows class.

A stalwart team provided tea and cakes all afternoon, many of which were consumed in the Garden in glorious sunshine. Maggie Scott was also able to run a plant stall outside.

Our next monthly meeting will be on Thursday, April 21, when David Usher will be talking to us about the Restoration of Hestercombe Gardens at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall. Visitors are always welcome.
