THE first "Great Sandford Bake Off" was a huge success and raised more than £500 for Sandford Playgroup.

The event, held at Sandford Parish Hall on Saturday, January 28, was organised by Cathy Webb.

There were a large number of entries in the five categories; cakes, cookies and tray bakes, Devon cream tea, "Free From" and a children’s section.

Visitors paid an entry fee which allowed them try as much cake as they wanted and to vote for their favourites. Only children could vote for their favourites in the children’s category.

The winners were: Cakes - Laura Hammond, cookies and tray bakes - Christopher Hemmings, Devon Cream tea - Jenny Phillips, "Free From" - Dominic Hemmings and Children’s section - Darcey and Will Hammond.

There were also some food and drink related demonstrations throughout the event including a Georgian Tea Ceremony by Hiromi Wilk.

Activities for the children included drawing, cake decorating, badge making and making and decorating a chef’s hat.

The Great Bake Off was a new event for Sandford and because of its successful the organisers hope to run it again next year.
