AT the February meeting of Crediton History and Museum Society, members enjoyed an illustrated talk entitled “Finds from Shipwrecks in Devon”, given by Charlotte Coles.

She gave an amazing presentation, going back 300 years and more. Members were fascinated to hear that one shipwreck had a leather cargo, when the rolls of leather were well-preserved and wrapped, and laid under the silt.

Some of the leather has now been made into various articles including shoes, which are in a museum.

Other finds included personal items and shoe buckles.

The Society’s next meeting is on Monday, March 13 at 7.30pm in the Boniface Centre, when Isolde Summers will talk about the history of St Lawrence Chapel.

Currently available at the Museum and the offices of the Crediton Courier is a Spring Quiz sheet. Copies are £1 each with all money raised going to museum funds. Closing date is April 30.
