ERRORS in Mid Devon District Council’s formal documentation about proposed parking rises have been fixed after mistakes were spotted by the public.

The local authority was discussing a report at a meeting which claimed charges in its car parks had not increased since June 2023, even though they actually rose last year.

And a proposal to increase fees in car parks across the district by five per cent had also been incorrectly applied in certain instances, with some suggested charges notionally rising as much as 16 per cent.

Furthermore, a proposal surrounding off-street parking restrictions included an incorrect address, and had it been progressed for “St George’s Place” rather than the actual St George’s Court, would have applied to a non-existent road.

The errors were spotted by a member of the public who attended the recent meeting.

Resident Nick Quinn said: “This tariff-rounding is true for short stays and long stays in the Tiverton multi-storey, but it is not true for long-stay parking in Crediton or Cullompton, where the tariffs have been ‘rounded up’ to the next pound.

“Crediton and Cullompton members should be outraged, as the tariffs proposed for their car parks mean the cost of a 10-hour stay would increase by nine per cent and a five-hour stay would increase by a massive 16 per cent.”

While most of the proposed fee rises were within the five per cent range – rounded up or down to the nearest 10p – some longer stays in the likes of Crediton and Cullompton looked like they could rise by much more.

The document said 10 hours in Station Road in Cullompton was £6.40 now, and even though it considered a 32p rise to be equivalent to five per cent (meaning a £6.70 fee), it was proposing to raise the charge to £7.

And a stay of up to five hours, currently £4.30, should only have been proposed as having a 22p rise (meaning a £4.50 charge), but the paper suggested the tariff could rise to £5.

The parking fee proposals had been produced by the council’s economy and assets policy development group, and still need to be sent to the cabinet for approval.

A spokesperson for Mid Devon District Council said there had been a “typing error” in relation to the last round of car park fee increases, and acknowledged “proposed rises in parking fees were stated incorrectly in relation to some of our longer-term tariffs”.

“This was a clerical mistake, which [alongside the error of the date that prices last increased] was corrected in the economy and assets policy development group meeting,” the spokesperson said.

“As a result, all tariffs have been reviewed and checked prior to these being taken onto cabinet for final consideration.

“The figures have been corrected to ensure they are aligned to the five per cent recommendation from the car parking consultative group to cover the cumulative inflation rise that has taken place in 2024/25 and 2025/26, with rises rounded up or down to the nearest 10p.”
