MARY King MBE, multi-medal winner for her equestrian achievements spanning three decades, has become a Deputy Lieutenant of Devon.

Mrs King, awarded with an MBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to equestrianism, will be the current Lord Lieutenant of Devon David Fursdon’s, first Deputy appointment in the county.

The Lieutenancy Office is the Monarch’s link with the county of Devon, and David Fursdon’s role as the Queen’s representative is to uphold the dignity of the crown and to celebrate the achievements of the people of Devon and their service to others.

HM Lord-Lieutenant David Fursdon appointed Mary yesterday (March 24). Mr Fursdon said: “I’m absolutely delighted to appoint Mary King as my first Deputy Lieutenant in the county.

“Mary, like myself, feels proud to live in the wonderful county of Devon, and I am pleased that she will be taking up this important post.

“She has been an inspiration to sportsmen and women, not only in Devon but also throughout the UK, where she is known and respected for her successful equestrian career.

“While she is of course also internationally acclaimed for her skill and talent as a three-day event rider, Mary remains firmly rooted in Devon, and I know that her experience will bring a great deal to the Lieutenancy in the county.”
