A PROUD Devonian, award winning folk singer and musician Jim Causley has dedicated much of his career to researching and reviving the forgotten gems of his native western peninsula.
On Friday, June 17 at The Red Lion, Shobrooke, from 7.30pm, Jim will present an evening jam-packed with Devonshire delights that richly bring to life the distinct flavour of music-making from this unique corner of the British Isles.
He will be drawing from the collections of Victorian folksong collectors such as Sabine Baring-Gould and Cecil Sharp, more modern collectors and writers including Cyril Tawney and Tony Rose, Edwardian ballads and Music Hall ditties, as well as a few of his own self-penned hits.
From “Arscott of Tetcott” to “Widecombe Fair” and everything in between, this show is a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to Devon’s rich musical culture.
An alternative format of Jim’s Devon Songs Concert is his “Cream Tea Concert”!
Whilst touring his Christmas show in December, Jim learnt that many people in rural communities prefer daytime events, especially during the cold, dark winter months and so he came up with the idea of combining a traditional Devonshire afternoon tea with a concert of Devonshire songs.
From 2pm to 3pm is the ideal starting time for an hour long concert which Jim will provide – with no interval – followed by a delicious Devonshire cream tea provided by the venue – where everyone can socialise and chat about the music they have just enjoyed.
The Show will run for 90 minutes and the cost is £10 for adults.
