THE next talk for the Crediton Area History and Museum Society will be by the acclaimed photographer Chris Chapman.
In his talk “Two Photographers in Devon”, Chris will talk about his working practice and friendship with another well-known Devon-based photographer, James Ravilious, whose work memorably captured so many elements of changing rural life in Devon.
Chris, based on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, has a memorable body of work, some of which is reproduced in his books, including “A Photographic Friendship” and his most recent publication, “Hallowed Earth”.
Chris is a Dartmoor photographer and author creating photographs, books, films and other work.
He has taken photographs during the last 50 years.
The Dartmoor Society Award for 2008 was presented to Chris, who lives in Throwleigh. The inscription on the Award plate reads “for his outstanding documentary photography of people and place”.
James Ravilious (August 22, 1939 to September 29, 1999), was a British photographer, who specialised in recording the rural life of north Devon.
Inspired by an exhibition of the work of French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ravilious took up photography shortly after moving with his wife to Devon in the 1970s.
He was asked to contribute work to the Beaford Archive, a means of documenting images to show the lifestyle associated with a small area of North Devon.
What began as a short-term project turned into a 17-year quest. Ravilious created some 80,000 black and white images for Bedford Arts, and preserved more than 5,000 old photographs of the area.
The archive is an internationally important collection.
The talk will be at the Boniface Centre on Monday, February 9. Doors open at 7pm, the talk beginning at 7.30pm.
The cost is £2 for Crediton Area History and Museum Society, £5 for non-members.
