SAINT Andrew's Church in Colebrooke is delighted to host a concert by folk duo Steve Turner (accordion) and Helena Torpy (violin) on Saturday, May 23.
Both musicians have strong local connections: Steve lives in Coleford while Helena used to live in the area until she moved to Bristol a few years ago.
Steve and Helena have been playing together for over 30 years.
They originally met on the folk scene in Exeter, when Helena had just completed her music degree there.
They discovered their musical styles to be very compatible and started playing together as a duo.
When you listen to them it is often hard to tell who is who, as their instruments blend so well together, producing music that is both beautiful and original, and very well suited to the fine, natural acoustic of the church.
The concert will comprise a selection of original tunes, inspired by the rich traditions of European dance forms such as waltz, mazurka, polska, and schottis.
It will consist of two 45-minute halves, doors opening at 7pm for a 7.30pm start and finishing around 9.30pm.
The duo have produced a number of CDs, including Sideways Air, Magnify and Cosmos. These will be for sale during the interval and after the concert.
Refreshments, including home-made cakes, wine and soft drinks, will be served during the interval.
There will be a raffle, so the advice is to take along some change.
Whilst there is no entrance fee, the suggested donation for the event will be £10 per person.
Profits from the evening will go towards the church’s operating costs.
