DEVON Folk, the county's leading folk organisation, is delighted to announce a new initiative aimed at reaching younger people in the county. Called Cool Folk, the initially online only magazine will contain features, articles, festival information and a What's On in the folk world in Devon, section. To launch Cool Folk, readers under 30 years old are offered the chance to get an article published on the site and in its parent magazine, What's Afoot and an opportunity to be part of the editorial team for Cool Folk – a great opening for anyone wanting to get into journalism! The article should be no more than 150 words long and should describe the author's experience of being involved in a folk activity – such as a dance workshop at school, playing folk tunes in an orchestra or band, maypole dancing, singing folk songs, or going to a folk festival. What's Afoot Editor, Sue Hamer-Moss explains: "What's Afoot is an amazing magazine, which has been going for nearly 35 years with more than 100 editions. "It is run on a shoestring, but we have so many knowledgeable and passionate volunteer writers, who know so many brilliant artists, that it is packed with interesting articles, as well as containing more than 10 pages of events and contacts. "However, it must be one of the best kept secrets in Devon and it sadly does not reach younger people. "The aim of the competition and Cool Folk is to reach people who may not even realise that they are involved in, or enjoying, folk activities". The competition will have categories for under 11's, 11-16 years and over 16 age groups. The article must be written by the named author and can be in MS Word, e-mail text or scanned (legible) hand written copy. The article may include one picture. Authors must either: live in Devon, go to school in Devon, and/or be writing about an event in Devon. All entries must reach the editor, Sue Hamer-Moss, by email at sue@:hamer-moss.co.uk no later than June 1, 2014. For further ideas about what to put in your article, see the current issue of What's Afoot (104), which is available in most folk clubs, the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington or from the What's Afoot editor. Cool Folk will be initially published online: http://www.facebook.com/DevonCoolFolk">www.facebook.com/DevonCoolFolk and: http://www.devonfolk.co.uk">www.devonfolk.co.uk and in What's Afoot magazine itself. Devon Folk sponsor many local festivals such as Dartmoor, Teignmouth and South Brent, as well as folk projects for all ages in the county. What's Afoot is sponsored by Devon businesses – Devon Telecom, Devonshire Asset Management and Fidelius insurance brokers.
