Crediton v Tiverton

A COLD but sunny Sunday morning saw this local derby played at Crediton.

Two games were played. In the first, the teams battled hard, with strong running rugby, Conrad Saunders and Niall Davies-Hale making break after break.

The rucking and mauling was particularly impressive, with Matt Goodman winning turnover ball.

The teams were evenly matched and in the end the spoils were shared after a feast of tries bringing the score to Crediton 30 – Tiverton 30.

In the second game, the Crediton side gelled to give their best performance of the season. Everyone worked together as a team, with some good passing and support play.

Ethan Pearce made charges deep into opposition territory and Dan Lyons scored his first try for the club.

Owen Twigg made dancing runs through the Tivvy defence along with Barney Ames. Ben Rodd ripped the ball away from the opposition at every opportunity and Lewis Terry pounced on any loose ball. Fred Peck gave a determined tackling display, ably assisted by wing Jake Burrows.

Crediton ran out deserved winners 30-0. Two very entertaining games of rugby.

Bideford 0

AFTER only three starts since the beginning of November due to the appalling rains that we have experienced, the team were looking forward to this quick return match against Bideford.

It was bitterly cold but the game opened at a fast and furious pace with both sides contesting the ball keenly.

After a number of searching runs, the Crediton forwards managed to push the team down in the opposition's half.

From a set piece scrum, Luke Styles who was playing at scrum half for the first time this season darted over the line to score the first try. He failed to make the conversion.

After more end to end encounters and with the game being played at a fair pace considering the mud under foot, Crediton went over for another try after Ben Cullen picked up the ball from No 8 and scored the home team's second try of the half.

This time Luke Styles made the conversion and Kirton went into the break 12-0 up.

The second half saw the home team exert huge pressure on the Bideford line but they were unable to convert this into points.

There were a number of close encounters and on two occasions the home team went over the line only for the referee to be unsighted and unable to give the score.

In the final 10 minutes, Kirton moved the ball beautifully along the back line and Mike Sanders appeared to have scored in the corner.

Again though the Bideford linesman called a forward pass and the try was disallowed.

Another good performance by Crediton and they appear to have gained some self-belief over the last three games!

One more game next weekend at home against Kingsbridge and then the team rest for a couple of weekends over the Christmas and New Year period.

Newcomer to the side Luke Pearce was rightly voted Man of the Match.

Barnstaple 22

A VERY tight game between two teams having excellent seasons. Crediton made all the early running and should have amassed some points before Barnstaple went 7-0 up with Fred Kingdon's converted try.

Josh Lee scored a penalty from half way to make it 3-7, but Barnstaple scored another try through Palfreyman.

Rob Somerwill reduced the deficit with Credy's opening try, some good passing along the back line resulted in him dummying a pass to create a gap to make the score 8-12 in Barnstaple's favour at half time.

Linford Brock extended the lead with a try, but Crediton came back making the score 13-17, Neil Hookway's crossfield kick was caught by Jake Hetherington, and following some excellent rucking, Henry Nuthall crossed the line for the try.

Barnstaple pressurised the Crediton line, Credy failing to clear, resulting in a five-metre scrum from which Brock scored again. Crediton hadn't finished though, and after more good rucking, Gareth Dart scored to make it 20-22, with Josh Lee just failing to convert from a wide angle and level the scores.
