THERE has been much comment among the town’s pub goers to find that Crediton’s Wetherspoon is up for sale. It is remaining open until a sale goes through.
The General Sir Redvers Buller is one of seven Wetherspoon establishments on the market now in addition to the 32 put up for sale in September.
It is the only one in Devon currently on the market.
Like them, Crediton’s Wetherspoon will remain open and trading until it is sold.
This month J D Wetherspoon confirmed the appointment of CBRE and Savills to sell the seven pubs, the Buller being among five freehold units. Others are in Peebles, Fareham, Fraserburgh, plus leasehold units in Hammersmith and Derby.
Built first as a private house, 32 High Street became Crediton Liberal Club in 1908, the striking front porch said to have been added two years later for the visit of Liberal Prime Minister, David Lloyd George who addressed an audience from the porch roof.
It was acquired by Wetherspoons a number of years ago.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We can confirm that The General Sir Redvers Buller is up for sale.
“On occasion the company does put some of its pubs up for sale.
“This is a commercial decision.
“We understand that both staff and customers will be disappointed with the decision.
“The pub will remain open and trading as a Wetherspoon outlet until it is sold.”
