FOLLOWING the sudden and tragic death of 10 year-old Samuel Crocker, after a road accident at the end of February last year, the “Sparkle for Samuel” appeal in aid of Devon Air Ambulance Trust was set up in his name.
In the months since, an extraordinary number of activities have been undertaken from the whole local community in Crediton and beyond.
Among the local fundraisers are Crediton Operatic and Dramatic Society (CODS) who, last week, added £850 to the sum bringing the total to an incredible £32,989.43 so far!
Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance, Caroline Creer, went along to receive the cheque and met members of CODS as well as Samuel’s parents, Stuart and Clare.
Caroline told the “Courier”: “We have been overwhelmed with the support for the ‘Sparkle for Samuel’ appeal.
“Samuel’s death touched so many people and I sincerely hope that the fantastic sum that has been raised in his memory will be of some comfort when they see the Devon Air Ambulances continuing to fly – what an amazing legacy in Samuel’s memory.”
As part of the work in the community CODS members choose an annual local charity to support.
CODS chose the “Sparkle for Samuel” appeal as their charity of the year and donations were collected at each of their performances during the year.
CODS was also assisted by Gary Grant of Club Crediton, who kindly ran a collection for CODS at Club Crediton throughout the year.
CODS said they were delighted that the people of Crediton responded to their special cause this year which helped them raise a record total in their annual charities collection.
In addition, Samuel’s cousin, Lily Keenor, recently contributed to the “Sparkle for Samuel” appeal.
Her mum, Helen, said: “Lily took part in the Exeter half marathon challenge for children and raised more than £350 for the DAAT “Sparkle for Samuel” appeal.
“She has received a certificate from the charity and a letter of thanks, as well as appearing on their ‘Facebook’ page.
“She was extremely close to Samuel and they got up to lots of mischief together!”
Stuart and Clare said: “We would like to thank CODS for their thoughtfulness in choosing ‘Sparkle for Samuel’ in aid of DAAT as their charity over the last year. They have raised a fantastic amount.
“We would also like to extend our thanks to Lily and everyone who has donated to DAAT in memory of Samuel - the total so far is overwhelming.”
