QUEEN Elizabeth’s School, Crediton student, Chris Lomas (19), who lives in Cheriton Fitzpaine, recently enjoyed a two-day placement in Westminster to see what life is like in an MP’s office.

Chris had written to Central Devon MP Mel Stride asking if he could gain some first-hand knowledge of politics before he hopes to go on to study International Relations at Sheffield.

After finishing his placement Chris said: “It’s been really interesting helping to organise Mel’s diary, handle some of his correspondence and assist on a couple of specific issues.

“I particularly enjoyed doing some research for him ahead of a meeting he has in his constituency next week regarding the inpatient beds at Crediton Hospital – a facility used by a lot of people in my village.”

Mel commented: “It was great to meet Chris and hopefully his short time with us will give him an insight into a number of the national and local issues tackled by MPs and will inspire him to keep studying hard and secure that university place.”

During his placement Chris also went on a tour of Westminster, spent time in the House of Commons listening to Culture, Media and Sport questions, handled responses to Mel’s latest survey and assisted with some casework.
