THE Archbishops of Canterbury and of York together with Prime Minister Theresa May requested church bells throughout the country to ring in solidarity with Notre Dame Cathedral following the disastrous fire.

This was to take place on Maundy Thursday and to take whatever form could be organised at short notice.

Consequently the bells of Holy Cross Church, Crediton’s Parish Church, rang from noon on Thursday, April 18.

The band, led by Tower Captain Geoff Sparling, had an ecumenical feel containing as it did one ordained Roman Catholic and one member of the Methodist church.

The band also included Antonia Tregenza, wife of the recently installed Rector.

Call changes on 10 bells were rung in two brief spells lasting a total of 30 minutes. All the performances nationally are to be collected and published together.
