CREDITON Museum, which is located at the old Town Hall in Searle Street, will reopen on Wednesday, April 19 at 10am and will feature an exhibition called "Down on the Farm".
It will be about farming during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Exhibits will include a farmhouse kitchen layout, and farm equipment and tools that are no longer in common use.
The highlights of the exhibition will be a 1938 Allis Chalmers Tractor and a horse drawn plough (unfortunately minus the horse).
Also on display will be a set of platform scales (that operate in much the same way as present-day medical scales) with “To weigh 4cwt, Mills Brothers, Maker, Crediton” cast into the platform top.
Mills Brothers were ironmongers who traded at 137 High Street (now James Antiques and Crediton Tandori) for much of the 20th century.
One hundredweight (abbreviated to “cwt”) is 112 pounds (2.2 pounds = 1 kilo) and with the onset of Brexit, who knows we might have to start using this old imperial system again!
The exhibition will open from 10am-4pm, Tuesday to Friday, and on Saturdays from 10am-1pm and admission is free.
