AN URGENT appeal has been launched to find two lollipop people to help at the crossing on the A377 in East Street, Crediton, near Hayward's School.
Andrew Eagles, Devon County Council school crossing patrol manager, is disappointed that posters at the school and leaflets advertising the job have not, so far, brought any response.
He explained: "Jean May, who has been the school crossing patrol person there for 28 years, and Ann Hosker, who has been the stand-in for Jean for 10 years, are both retiring at the end of this term.
"We need two people. One to be the permanent crossing patrol person, one to be reserve. We have tried to persuade Jean and Ann to continue, they have done wonderful service and will be hard acts to follow.
"We need someone to give the commitment for 38 weeks a year, morning and afternoon, or to share the job, and there are 14 weeks paid holiday.
"Whoever does it will be paid £6.22 an hour for working almost seven hours a week. We had hoped to find someone before the end of this term," said Mr Eagles. Training is given and equipment provided.
Anyone interested should contact Andrew Eagles on 01392 382247.
