RESIDENTS and organisations across the district can now call a new hotline designed to help communities access vital information and support during the Coronavirus outbreak.

People can also use the number to volunteer their services and help out in their local area.

The number to call is 01884 234387 and the line will be open during office hours, Monday to Thursday from 8.30am to 5pm and Fridays from 8.30am until 4.30pm. It will be closed on Bank Holidays.

The MDDC Coronavirus Community Hotline has been set up to help individuals who need support, as well as enabling family, friends or neighbours to raise concerns about someone in their community they are worried about.

Groups and voluntary organisations can also use the hotline to access information, share local schemes as well as raise concerns about someone they may feel is isolated and in need of support.

Lisa Lewis, Head of Customer Service, said: “We know there is support out there and our communities have already been amazing, acting quickly to look out for one another, but we also know there is a need to co-ordinate this help and ensure everyone has someone they can call if they need advice or support.

"While we must look after our own health and that of our families and friends, among our community there will be those in real need of material and psychological support, particularly during isolation at home."

The Council is already operating an emergency shielding hub (www.middevon.gov.uk/mid-devon-supports-countywide-shielding-hub-for-the-most-vulnerable/ ) alongside, Devon County Council (www.devon.gov.uk/ ), and is delivering food and medicine to the most vulnerable who have been instructed by the Government to shield themselves in their own homes.

This new hotline is not a replacement for this but is designed to help those people who may need help finding their local support, who may be seeking clarity about what they can and can’t do, or who need help accessing other support such as social services or foodbanks.

The hotline is also available for anyone who can volunteer their time to support their local community.

The Council already has a directory of community groups (www.middevon.gov.uk/residents/coronavirus-support-for-communities-and-businesses/community-support-across-mid-devon/ ) which are up and running but is keen to hear about any more to ensure everyone has the most up-to-date information available.
