A NEW Community Food Larder was launched at Crediton Library on Monday, March 14 and offers free produce to anyone who can use it and wants to cut down on food waste.

The Community Food Larder is a partnership between Crediton Library and Sustainable Crediton and offers supplies of shop end-of-date, surplus vegetables, fruit and baked goods, which would otherwise go to waste.

The supplies are collected from several local retailers, so there is a range of food on offer which could be different each day. People with surplus fruit and vegetables from their gardens/allotments can also contribute.  Produce remains available during library opening hours, whilst in good condition, until it runs out and is free to everyone.

Sue Lee, Crediton Library Supervisor, said: “I am delighted to be working with Sustainable Crediton to reduce food waste.

“It is great to see so many people using the food larder.

“Many thanks to the Sustainable Crediton volunteers for collecting the surplus food and all the retailers that are taking part: Co-op Food, Four Seasons, The Green House, The Plant Shed, Stevie B’s Bakery and Tesco Express, with more retailers planning to contribute in the near future.”

The opening hours for Crediton Library are: Monday and Friday 9am to 6pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
