PRESIDENT of Colebrook WI, Hazel Walker, welcomed members to the Parish Hall for our October meeting.

Four members are going to Worcester for the annual Christmas shopping trip and it was decided that the committee would shortlist venues for our Christmas meal at their next meeting.

Eight ladies had attended the Red Earth Group meeting at North Tawton and had had a very enjoyable evening with an extremely interesting and funny speaker.

The icing on the cake was that Colebrooke won the Rose Bowl competition for an outrageously decorated bra which had been great fun to do.

Our speaker for the evening was Peter Hood who had stepped in at short notice as our original speaker had unfortunately had to cancel. He talked to us about the History of Games.

He had a collection of “boards”, the originals of which would have been have been wood, leather or bone. The game of “Horseshoe” has been around for about 2,500 years and many card games have been around since medieval times.

It was a really good talk and interesting to see how games were invented. Marjorie Hockridge won the competition for the oldest game with a wonderful pre-war board game.

Our November meeting constitutes a visit to Oliver’s Bakery, in Crediton, for a demonstration of Christmas goodies.
