WHAT can only be described as a “Clerical” error prevented the full induction of Rev Preb Nigel Guthrie from being installed as the new Vicar at St David’s Church, Exeter, on Tuesday, January 16.
The Bishop of Crediton, Rt Rev Dame Sarah Mullally, said at the beginning of the service that “unfortunately” the necessary licence had not been completed and she was, therefore, only able to install the former Crediton Rector as a Curate at St David’s rather than induct him as the new Vicar.
Much of the proceedings was able to take place and Bishop Sarah said that the Archdeacon of Exeter, the Ven Christopher Futcher, would return to install Nigel, fully, within a matter of weeks and when the necessary licence had been completed.
There was a full church of several hundred people for the service, including about 70 members of the congregation from the Crediton benefice.
More than 25 clergy attended the service during which Rev Guthrie had to take various oaths and make declarations.
The Act of Dedication included presenting the new minister with symbols of ministry at various points around the church. This included water at the font, oil near the Chancel steps, the presentation of a “Bible” near the pulpit and a paten and chalice and bread and wine near the altar.
Welcomes were extended by the Rural Dean, Deanery Lay Chair and Churchwardens as well as fellow clergy, the Lord Mayor of Exeter, local councillors and other dignitaries.
The service involved the congregation and people of the parish to support their new minister in his ministry and commitments from Rev Guthrie. The church choir played an integral part in the service.
The Bishop thanked all those who had cared for the parish during the interregnum.
Rev Guthrie was Rector at Crediton Parish Church from 2002 until earlier this month.
Refreshments were enjoyed by all who attended after the service.
