THE Executive Headteacher at Chulmleigh Academy Trust has written a letter warning parents at the Trust’s school’s concerning an alleged attempt to grab an 11-years-old schoolgirl on her way home from Chulmleigh Primary School.
Mr Michael Johnson wrote: "In order that all our children can be kept safe, I am writing to inform you of a serious incident which occurred at the end of the school day on Tuesday, March 21.
"One of our Year 6 pupils at Chulmleigh Primary School was spoken to by a man in a grey car, he asked her if she would like a lift.
"When she refused, the man shouted at her to get in his car. She ran away and arrived home safely.
"Devon and Cornwall Police and Chulmleigh Academy Trust are working together to ensure all pupils are safe on their journey to and from school.
"There will be a police presence outside Chulmleigh Primary School this week at the end of the school day.
"Our advice to parents and carers is that all pupils should maintain a vigilant and safe approach when walking without adult supervision.
"We would suggest primary school pupils are picked up by adults and secondary school pupils walk in pairs, where possible. Pupils will be spoken to in assemblies about the safety precautions they should take.
"Should you have any information about this incident or any concerns regarding the safety of your child please contact the police directly."
Inspector Bartlett from Devon and Cornwall Police also wrote to parents.
He said the girl did the right thing and refused and then ran straight home and told a parent, who then called the police.
He added that enquiries were underway and police wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area of Chulmleigh Primary School between 3.30pm and 4pm and who may have seen anything suspicious.
Children were warned about "Stranger Danger" and what to do if approached.
The advice is: "Make sure your child is aware that if approached by a stranger, always say no and head straight to the nearest place of safety, whether that is home or a school, and speak to a parent or teacher immediately.
"If you are in immediate danger and have a mobile telephone, then call 999."
