PUPILS and staff at Chulmleigh Community College are delighted with their 2017 GCSE results.

Head teacher, Michael Johnson said: “We were delighted by the endorsement of our results via the progress measure (Progress 8) for the school. The results are a testament to the hard work of the pupils and staff over a number of years, and are rooted in our deep belief that literacy and discipline form a solid foundation for success.

“We relentlessly promote these two vital foundation stones, which our continued and sustained success is built upon.

“Last year alone our pupils read 8,137 books, 324,830,785 words and spent an average of 25 minutes reading high-quality literature a day. Our top readers have read more than 2,000,000 words each, and the reading age of 74 of our pupils rose by more than two years over the last academic year.

“We are proud of our pupils and of their GCSE achievements, but equally so of their attitude to reading, and the dedication and commitment they have shown to their studies, and we look forward to our current Year 11 sitting their GCSEs next summer.”

Jo Nunn (Literacy co-ordinator) added: “There is no better way of broadening our minds than being able to see the world through someone else’s eyes. This is the magic of books.”
