FOLLOWING on from the enormously successful village Open Garden event last month, which saw 120 people visit the 11 village gardens on display, Cheriton Fitzpaine Garden Club is aiming for the most entries ever to its Summer Show which takes place on Saturday, August 17 at 2.30pm at the Parish Hall.

Last year there were 367 entries to the show varying from more than 40 wonderful floral art displays, some six-feet high sunflowers, pot plants and of course vegetables and fruit of all kinds.

The most fun class was that of an animal made of fruit or vegetables for which there were some really imaginative entries!

Garden Club Chairman Andrew Dean commented: “Our Club is going from strength-to-strength and attracting people of all ages to join us because of the varied and fun events we organise.

“We now have almost 60 members. The Club’s youngest member is eight-years-old and the oldest is 93. We encourage entries to our Show from non-members too. Anyone can enter our Open Classes whether or not they are a Club member.

“These Open Classes include our now popular animal made from fruit and vegetables, a vase of cut garden flowers and a children’s class of a miniature garden in a tray.”

Paula Mossman, who won the Most Points in Show in 2018 commented: “Our Show gets bigger and better every year. Our smart updated Parish Hall is fairly bursting at the seams on the day and the smell is wonderful from the sweet peas and other scented flowers.

“This year we are confident we will make it to 400 entries - a record! I was delighted to win the overall title last year, a real surprise, but I am going to have some stiff competition in 2019!’’

Entry to the Show is free. To add to the magnificent displays on view there will be a garden-themed raffle and of course the home-made teas for which Cheriton is famous. In fine weather these can be enjoyed in the hall garden.

All-in-all a great afternoon at which visitors from Crediton and the surrounding area will be made very welcome.
