IN contrast to the traditional Christmas carols, the sound that filled Morchard Bishop Memorial Hall for the Christmas Bazaar of St Mary’s Church, Morchard Bishop, was that of a Caribbean steel band played by the children of Morchard Bishop Primary School. The rhythmic music had everyone tapping their toes.  The explanation for the change in season was that the children had been learning all about the Caribbean earlier in the year.

Children featured very much in the bazaar.

There was a large toy stall, lots of children’s competitions and an original “Teddy Bola” with everyone who entered winning a prize of a cuddly toy, from an elephant to a crocodile.

For many of the young ones, the highlight of the afternoon was a visit from Father Christmas. One small child watched wide-eyed as he arrived carrying a sack full of presents for all the children.

Adults were not forgotten. There were stalls selling Christmas gifts and decorations, jewellery, a tombola and cakes and produce.

Even the cakes were festive with Christmas tree shortbread and meringues decorated with tiny bells.  There was also a Grand Raffle and afternoon teas with mince pies and cakes.

It was a very happy family occasion and resulted in a boost of £881.25 for St Mary’s Church funds.
