OCTOBER started for members of Tedburn St Mary WI with a meeting on Tuesday 7th, held at Tedburn St Mary Village Hall, with 29 WI members and two visitors in attendance.

Following the business section, members enjoyed an excellent presentation delivered by the speaker, Tony Gale, entitled “Patriotic Girls Are We”.

Tony, a local historian, gave an educational and informative talk about the role women played working in agriculture during World War One.

Women worked in the Forage Corps, Forestry Corps and Land Army.

The presentation was illustrated with photographs of women working on farms in the local area.

Tony gave members a detailed insight as to what life was like for these patriotic and dedicated women, at such a critical and complex time for our nation.

A huge thank you to Tony for sharing his extensive knowledge of this period of history with us.

There was also the opportunity to take part in the monthly competitions, a raffle and enjoy refreshments.

Members visited The Beer Engine in Newton St Cyres this month to share time together over a delicious lunch.

Members played skittles with Alphington WI, followed by tea, and time spent together walking in our beautiful Devon countryside.

Future plans in October include lunch at Bernaville Garden Centre, walks and a craft session.

Regular meetings are held in Tedburn St Mary Village Hall on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm.

As always, we love to meet prospective new members, you will be warmly welcomed.

There are lots of activities every month, good speakers, walks, knitting and craft sessions. The first meeting attended is free to enable you to decide whether to join our WI. Just contact either President Jane on 07814 659526 or Secretary Rachel on 01647 61868.
