WHERE can you turn?
Before families became distanced from each other because of the need to find work which was sufficiently well paid to support a family, in times of trouble within the family they could nearly always turn to older members – mothers, fathers or grand-parents for help or advice.
As a result divorce or the removal of children from their parents, for being out of control were rarities rather than the norm.
As families had to move away from their family homes so their support networks disappeared and since then McMillan Williams Solicitors has seen a rise in the need for courts to adopt the familial role and make decisions for families in crisis.
The availability of, very often free, state funding by way of legal aid meant that divorce figures rose dramatically and the resolution of financial matters arising from the divorce became so protracted that the resultant bitterness and anger had a “knock-on” effect upon generations of their children.
Since the removal of legal aid for the majority of matters and the requirement to fund proceedings themselves, this has meant that much more thought is going into whether a marriage truly is over, or is it really impossible to make arrangements for children.
There has also been a significant change in the way that family solicitors approach divorce or children problems.
By far the majority are members of “Resolution” whose mantra is to conduct divorce and/or children matters in such a way as to encourage collaborative working between parents and help reduce animosity to a minimum, leading to a far happier generation of children.
McMillan Williams supports this ethos.
