FRIENDS of Crediton Library (FoCL) will be running a second-hand book sale at Crediton Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 18, 10am-1pm), with proceeds going to projects and enhancements at the Library.
Many books for these events are provided by Devon County library service from recently withdrawn volumes, and will be available at bargain prices, however, donations of books are also very welcome from members of the public.
These can be sold to help raise funds. Why not lighten your bookshelves, and bring along a volume a new owner can find pleasure in reading? (Books can also be donated at the Library at other times for future events).
A major project for FoCL is to support Crediton Library in creating an inviting outdoor area for library users, including disabled visitors. This requires the remodelling of the current outdoor space, adding a canopy, wheelchair access and seating.
FoCL is one of many similar groups, akin to the role of PTAs in schools, which can help Devon’s libraries broaden their role in the community, often by funding improvements to facilities, and supporting events which go beyond the core remit of the traditional library.
One example is the Summer Reading Challenge which encourages (mainly) primary-age children to enjoy reading during the summer holidays.
FoCL is funding a disco event at the end of the holidays for all those completing the Challenge. Another recent project was to convert book-shelves at Crediton Libary into mobile units which can be then moved to create a flexible open space for lectures and other events.
FoCL is also developing a series of evening events at Crediton Library during the 2019-2020 winter months, including illustrated lectures, social events and discussions.
Further information will follow in the pages of the “Courier”, and via publicity at the Library. You can also follow events at Crediton Library at: www.facebook.com/CreditonLibrary/ .
