RAISING funds to buy blinds for the windows, the Friends of Crediton Library held a coffee morning and sale of donated books on Saturday, February 18.
One of those attending was Cllr Nick Way, Crediton Town, Mid Devon District and Devon County Councillor.
Through Cllr Way, the Friends had received £1,600 from the Invest in Devon Fund. As Friends chairman, Julie Maddison, said: “Having wheels on the big table and shelves means we can move them around to use our space to the best.
“With Nick’s cheque towards the blinds to create blackout it will be so much more comfy when we have evening talks.
“Our list includes a digital projector and screen plus a PA system as well as a laptop computer so people can connect using their USB devices.
“These better facilities mean the library can be used more for talks and other events.”
Cllr Way added: “It is really great we have such an active group of Friends, it is terrific to see the library with lots of things happening.
“My children were brought up as I was, using the library. While all the digital things are good, there is nothing quite like having a book in your hands.”
Other people spoke of their excitement as children when they got their first library ticket.
The Friends hold a book sale twice a year, raising £50 on Saturday, and are at Crediton Farmers’ Market once a year. This year it will be the May 5 market.
There is always a box in the library for book donations for the next sale. The Friends’ annual meeting is to be held on Monday, February 27 at 7pm in the library on Belle Parade.
Julie Maddison added that the Friends’ fundraising was also to subsidise events held in the library, especially activities for children.
