A chain fixing the bench to the ground was cut through to remove the bench.
Jane Hole, clerk to Shobrooke Parish Council, said: “The community is very upset at the theft as the bench was donated by an elderly pensioner as part of the renovations of the War Memorial in commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War. It has been there since September 2015.”
Crediton Police Community Support Office Nicola Payne has issued an appeal for any witnesses or information.
She said: “If you were in the area during this time and may have seen anything suspicious that may provide a line of enquiry, please get in touch.”
She added: “Also, if you saw a vehicle near to the bench, please telephone 101, quoting crime reference CR/049614/17.”
