RECENTLY Crediton Community Bookshop (CCB) staged a first: theatre in the bookshop!
Crediton-based Philip Robinson performed his production of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s "Last Tape" to a packed house. This "one act one man tragi-comedy" was a captivating performance by a talented man which included many of the changes Beckett himself made when he directed it in the 1970s.
Rachel Vowles gave a pre-show talk on behalf of the director Polly Whitfield and then Robinson’s performance, so close to the audience, was both amusing and deeply moving.
Krapp’s "Last Tape" is the closest to everyday reality of all Beckett’s plays, addressing some of life’s fundamental questions: Can a person change? Do the lies we tell ourselves reveal our true self? Is life lived or just remembered?
Though 60 years old Krapp, an uncanny premonition of our tendency to record everything, is even more relevant now than when it was first performed in 1958, given that we live in a time of constant and pervasive self-documentation, on our telephones and on social media.
This 60th anniversary touring project was created by Philip Robinson in his 60th year and will be staged not in theatres, but in living rooms across the UK, Scandinavia and other European countries.
