AN emergency road closure has taken place on the A377 between Crediton and Newton St Cyres.

It is understood that the road is closed in both directions to enable emergency water works to be completed.

Local lanes near The Beer Engine, near Shobrooke and in other areas have been reported to be gridlocked at times this evening.

It is understood that the works began at about 6.30pm on Monday, October 6 and the work is expected to be completed by about 6am tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7.

It is believed that bus services have been diverted or cancelled.

In addition, there is an overnight road closure at Copplestone, with one section of the road closed through the village.

Three-way traffic lights are in operation around a part of the one-way system.
