The Senior Council for Devon has active members in 20 local groups across the county, with another nine in the pipeline.
It has the ears of Devon County Council and NHS Devon, and is the officially recognised organisation through which people aged over 50 can make their voices heard on a range of issues.
Now in response to requests from several individual Senior Council members in Crediton and the surrounding area, a public meeting has been arranged to explain the role of the council and how the creation of a local group could benefit the older residents of the district.
Development and Promotion Officer for the Senior Council, Tim Hall, said: "The Senior Council is non-political and open to anyone aged over 50 to join.
"Since its creation in 2008 it has been successful in influencing policy on dementia and it has contributed valuable thinking on rural services, concessionary fares, health and social care and intergenerational activities.
"Wherever possible local Senior Council groups work with other organisations on issues of joint concern, from starting and assisting with Memory Cafes to running computer classes with sixth formers."
Crediton Senior Council member Iris Mackie, of Old Tiverton Road, said: "Senior citizens are the largest group of voters and should all get together to put the country right.
"The more people get together, and the more people who come to this meeting, the better."
Fellow member Mary Collins, of Deep Lane, added: "I have been impressed by Senior Council achievements, particularly on dementia and the provision of community services."
All are welcome to attend the public meeting to mark the relaunch of the Crediton Senior Council group at the Boniface Centre in Church Lane, Crediton, at 11am on Wednesday, July 21.
