THE A377 in Crediton is currently closed to traffic and is not expected to be fully open for another couple of hours following a serious fire in an upstairs flat near the former Buccaneer’s Bar.

The public is asked to avoid the area for the next two hours.

Six fire crews and a turntable ladder from Exeter were used to put out the fire which saw smoke billowing up through East Street and Union Road.

The incident was discovered by the owner of the downstairs flat who rang Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue at about 6pm.

Fire crews were quickly on the scene and discovered the fire was severe.

Five other crews also attended and firefighters used hoses, ladders and many in breathing apparatus working outside and inside the premises.

Reporting from the scene, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager Matt Herdman, said: “It is a residential flat fire with no persons involved or injured.

“We currently have six appliances and a turntable here.

“Fire crews are exposing roof timbers to confirm that the fire is out and we have fire investigation officers working on establishing a cause.

“At the moment we have no other information on that.

“We are aware of the importance of local roads in the area but ask that members of the public please avoid the area for the next few hours.”

Crediton Jubilee film show attendees are advised of the road closure.

Motorists are advised to seek an alternative route.
