UPDATE: A MAN has died, another man has been arrested and four other people have been taken to hospital following the second collision.

Police were called to the scene on the southbound carriageway of the M5 near junction 28 at around 11.10pm on Thursday, September 18.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash. A driver of one of the vehicles, a Plymouth man in his 30s, died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A man in his 40s from the Cullompton area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is still in police custody.

Four other people were taken to hospital for treatment. None of them are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The northbound carriageway of the M5 has reopened, but the southbound side remains closed for the time being.

UPDATE: A MAN involved in the first collision has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Officers were called to the scene on the southbound carriageway of the M5 near junction 28 at around 9.50pm on Thursday, September 18.

The crash involved a Vauxhall Zafira, a Ford Ka and a Porsche Boxter. The male driver of the Ford Ka was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage. You can contact police online or by calling 101, quoting log number 806 of September 18.

Another crash took place at around 11.10pm near junction 28 the same day. Police will release more information in due course.

The M5 is still closed both ways while investigations continue into both collisions. Motorists should avoid the area.

TWO separate collisions are causing major delays on the M5 in Devon.

The motorway was shut at about 11pm yesterday, Thursday, September 18, in both directions between junction 27 at Sampford Peverell to junction 28 at Cullompton.

There are long queues of traffic in the area.

Accident investigation work is expected to be completed this morning, Friday, September 19, during which time the road will remain closed.

There are diversions in place through Willand but this is said to be very heavily congested.

Honiton to Monkton is also reported to be heavily congested.

It is understood that a number of people were injured in the collisions.
